Social Skills Apps For Children & Young Adults With Autism And Special Needs

Our Company

Founded by speech pathologists and sisters Jennifer Jacobs M.S. CCC-SLP and Laurie Jacobs M.A. CCC-SLP in 1999, Social Skill Builder provides appropriate tools for teaching social skills to children affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other language/learning difficulties.

Unlike their peers, children with ASD do not acquire basic social skills through general experience and observation, such as sharing enjoyment and maintaining eye contact. This social inadequacy often results in anxiety, depression, social avoidance, academic difficulties and problematic peer interactions.

Research has demonstrated that teaching social skills is one of the most effective treatments for children with ASD and helps them to succeed in their personal and academic lives. Jacobs and Jacobs, who maintain independent speech pathology practices, develop their curriculum based on the unique needs of their ASD clients.

Social Skill Builder’s curriculum, which includes the software Preschool Playtime, My School Day, My Community, and School Rules!, You are a Social Detective, uses interactive video sequences to imitate real life social scenarios where children commonly interact with peers.  In addition, Social Skill Builder has 3 applications available on iTunes, including Social Skill Builder LITE; Social Skill Builder:  My School Day and the Social Detective Beginner App.

This award winning curriculum, teaches children the “rules” of social communication, which include everything from appropriate social touch, body space and speech volume to appropriate school and community behavior and interactions.

These programs and applications are designed to facilitate learning while providing opportunities to pause and discuss information, to replay scenarios for greater recall and understanding and to engage in exercises that help the child carry learned skills into everyday life.

Social Skill Builder products cater to a wide range of functioning and abilities. From children learning key social vocabulary to answering multiple-choice questions and identifying social cues, to taking another persons perspective.  This learning hierarchy allows the child to then create novel social responses based on the situation shown all on their own!

Social Skill Builder’s products are designed for speech and occupational therapists, educators, counselors and psychologists, and parents who interact with children and adolescents ages 3-18 affected by ASD and other social learning/language deficits. The software does not require outside instruction or maintenance to facilitate.
