I use My Community and School Rules! Vol. 2 during my therapy sessions and absolutely love them as do my students. To see the appropriate and inappropriate behaviors is a priceless tool for my students with high functioning autism and asp. syndrome.
– Tracey Garrett

I have been researching for years for ways to enhance my childrens communication skills and education levels. Other parents have been searching and we have found that the schools lack in the area of teaching social skills. I have been doing personal research and came across your program in my psychology class. I was very pleased that you offer a demo and the testimonies that I read were reassuring. My children have been benefited greatly from the programs. Your company has been a blessing to us and I have passed on the information about your website to others. Please let me know of any other updates and software. Thank you!

Social Skill Builder and Social Thinking Partnering on New Software!

Michelle G. Winner of Social Thinking and Social Skill Builder founders Laurie and Jennifer Jacobs are developing a computer program based on joint research and knowledge! Social Skill Builder’s use of the video modeling method will be paired with the vocabulary and process of Social Thinking’s You are a Social Detective book. This new product will allow elementary age students to:

  • Become part of a group
  • Build and strengthen their ability to socially think through situations
  • Find clues to identify expected and unexpected behaviors to understand the social intentions of others
  • Build social smarts by using their social thinking tools
  • Appreciate the feelings of others
  • Understand how their thoughts, feelings and actions toward others have consequences
  • Motivate them to go beyond the standard “scripting” of what to say in social situations
  • Apply these concepts into their own social environment

Look for updates in upcoming issues of Interaction!

The lesson plan in each Social Skill Builder product allows the user to start where they left off in their last lesson at any time. Simply press the Lesson Plan button at the bottom of the screen, then you can choose the level you wish to customize. Check the videos and questions you wish to show and uncheck those you wish to eliminate from the sequence.

Slow Motion
Video Modeling

Sometimes you need to break down a skill into smaller steps in order to ensure learning. That's what a lot of therapists do with Social Skill Builder products; breaking down the lessons into more basic chunks and ultimately building the skills up to the full level. Using a comic strip can sometimes help with this breakdown, in areas such as:

  • Attention Getters
  • Maintainers
  • Holders
  • Interjections
  • Starters/Context Starters
  • Turn Transfer
  • Questions
  • Repairs
  • Topic Closures
  • Transfers

www.comiclife.com is a helpful site that can take your still pictures and convert them into comic strips. Here is an example of one we use often (image reprinted by permission).

We will provide in-depth information on slow motion video modeling in our ASHA convention session in New Orleans, Friday, Nov. 20, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m., or request the session slides at info@socialskillbuilder.com
